This new Virtual Line reservation is currently required to ride the Hagrid roller coaster, and can be made using your mobile device while inside the park.
Last week Universal Orlando started testing a new Virtual Line system. Currently the only attraction utilizing the system is Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure in Islands of Adventure.
Signs are located around the park to let guests know how to join the Virtual Line, and a QR code can be scanned to take you to the website. This system has not yet been implemented within the resort’s official app, as it is still being tested.
The new Virtual Line system requires you to enter an email address and the number of guests in your party before you can create a reservation.
You must also grant the website access to your GPS location, because you have to be on property to use it.
While the first available Virtual Line passes seem to go quickly in the morning, when the park first opens, more are released throughout the day as they become available.
Unlike the prior system, which would drop new available reservations at set times throughout the day, the new system will release new Virtual Line reservations as the attraction pushes through enough guests.
Refresh the page periodically throughout your visit to see if more reservations have opened up.
This system seems to be based on how well the ride is actually running, rather than relying on set times. You may even notice your reservation be adjusted, to a few minutes earlier, depending on the attraction’s current throughput.
Guests shouldn’t have to wait more than 20 minutes in the physical line once scanning the code on their reservation at the specified return time. You will have a 30 minute window to return once your reservation is ready.
The older system was usually used when this particular attraction’s physical line was too long, so you would still need to wait more than hour in the standby line after arriving for your Virtual Line reservation. This new system seems to replace much of the waiting, so you can enjoy other offerings at the park instead.
No word yet on if the new system will be permanent, or if other attractions will be added. Other rides, like Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon, are still utilizing Virtual Line through the official Universal Orlando mobile app.
