Disney’s robotic Olaf just made his public debut, and it was on the biggest stage possible — Jensen Huang’s keynote at NVIDIA GTC 2026.
The free-roaming, self-walking Olaf created by Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development walked onstage Monday, March 16 at the NVIDIA GTC 2026 conference in San Jose, California, joining NVIDIA’s President and CEO for a live demonstration. It’s the same character set to debut for guests inside World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris on March 29, with Hong Kong Disneyland to follow.
How Disney Built a Walking Olaf
The character is the result of a collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering R&D, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and NVIDIA. Imagineers used the NVIDIA Newton Physics Engine — an open-source, GPU-accelerated physics engine built on NVIDIA Warp and OpenUSD — to bring the snowman to life through deep reinforcement learning via simulation.
That simulation-first approach is what makes the technology notable: Olaf learned to walk and gesture in a fraction of the time traditional robotics development requires. Every movement was validated against the animated source material so the character stays true to how he moves in the films.
On the physical side, Olaf’s mouth and eyes are fully articulated, giving him genuine expression. He can speak and engage with guests in character. His arms, nose, buttons, eyebrows, and hair are all magnetically attached — which isn’t just for convenience. Those magnetic connections are part of the character’s comedic toolkit, allowing for on-brand physical gags.
The Tech Behind the Character
The project was first unveiled in Disney’s “We Call It Imagineering” series in an episode focused on Research & Development. The character’s authenticity comes from its training method: simulated reinforcement learning allowed Disney to iterate on movement patterns at a scale and speed that would be impossible with physical prototypes alone.
Moritz Bächer, Director of Disney Research Lab Zurich, will present “Disney’s Robotic Characters: From the Screen to Reality via Physical AI” on Tuesday, March 17 as part of NVIDIA GTC 2026. He’ll also join partners from NVIDIA, Google DeepMind, and Skild for a panel discussion on the Newton physics engine on Thursday, March 19.
When Can Guests See Olaf?
The robotic Olaf makes his guest debut at World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris on Saturday, March 29. Hong Kong Disneyland will follow, though no date has been confirmed for that location. No announcement has been made regarding Walt Disney World or Disneyland.
Disney has made photo and video assets available for media use via Frame.io.
