Super Nintendo World opened at Universal Studios Hollywood on February 17, 2023, and it changed the park overnight. Three years later, it remains one of the most impressive themed lands in Southern California, and Universal is showing no signs of slowing down.

What Super Nintendo World Brought to the Table

When Super Nintendo World arrived, it didn’t come light. Universal delivered a full-service dining location in Toadstool Cafe, a major E-ticket attraction in Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, interactive mini games scattered across the land, and the 1-UP Factory retail store. For a park that had been leaning heavily on screen-based attractions, Super Nintendo World was a statement. It proved Universal Studios Hollywood could build something immersive, original, and worth revisiting.

Three years in, the land is holding up. Toadstool Cafe still pulls a wait. Mario Kart still has a line. The Power-Up Bands are still selling, and for first-time visitors especially, they remain one of the best interactive experiences at any theme park. Almost everyone picks one up on their first visit and spends the day hunting down every mini game in the land. For someone visiting for the first, fifth, or even tenth time, the bands add a layer of engagement that most themed lands simply don’t have.

As someone who visits the park frequently, I’ll be honest: the interactive elements naturally lose some of their pull after dozens of visits. That’s not a knock on what Universal built. It’s just the reality of physical mini games versus something like a video game that can push updates and new content regularly. The foundation is there for Universal and Nintendo to explore ways to refresh or expand the interactive offerings over time, and I think that’s an exciting possibility rather than a problem.

Mario Kart remains the anchor of the land, and the ride holds up. The physical sets are detailed and immersive, the gameplay is engaging on every ride-through, and the combination of practical scenery with augmented reality creates something that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the theme park industry.

If there’s one area where the ride could evolve, it’s the AR technology itself. The augmented reality headsets that power the experience were developed years before the land opened. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge first debuted at Universal Studios Japan in March 2021, meaning the core technology was being designed and tested well before that. In a world where AR and AI are advancing rapidly, the field of view on the current headsets is the one element that feels like it has room to grow.

The good news is that Universal built the ride in a way that makes a technology refresh relatively straightforward. The physical sets don’t need to change. The gameplay doesn’t need to change. A headset upgrade that expands the field of view could elevate the entire experience without requiring a major overhaul. It would be similar to what Universal did with The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Islands of Adventure, when the ride’s animation was remastered in high definition in 2012. That targeted improvement kept Spider-Man feeling fresh for years without altering the ride itself. Mario Kart is in a great position for the same kind of evolution.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Brings New Life

Starting on MAR10 Day, Tuesday, March 10, Universal is rolling out limited-time experiences to celebrate The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which premieres on April 1, 2026. These additions run daily through Monday, April 13, at both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Epic Universe in Orlando:

  • Yoshi Meet and Greet — A limited-time character interaction inside Super Nintendo World. Yoshi has previously only been available for meet and greets during Universal Fan Fest Nights at Hollywood, making this a notable addition.
  • Luma Interactive Shoulder Pals — A first-of-its-kind offering. Available in blue and yellow, these accessories feature light and sound effects and communicate with each other when two guests stand close together.
  • Rosalina Cupcake — A blue velvet cupcake filled with blueberry cheesecake, topped with lemon buttercream and a chocolate crown and star.
  • Galaxy Popcorn — Multicolored berry-flavored popcorn with edible glitter.
  • CityWalk Photo Op — A galactic tunnel-like photo experience inspired by the film, available at both Universal CityWalk Hollywood and Universal CityWalk Orlando.

Guests can also catch The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at Universal Cinema at CityWalk Hollywood and Universal Cinemark at CityWalk Orlando beginning April 1. AMC Theatres has already revealed a Yoshi popcorn bucket for the film’s release, and it looks exactly as fun as it sounds.

This is what commitment looks like. Universal and Nintendo aren’t just maintaining Super Nintendo World. They’re actively investing in keeping it connected to new releases and giving guests reasons to come back. The fact that these experiences are rolling out at both Hollywood and Epic Universe simultaneously shows this is a partnership that’s scaling, not coasting.

Universal Studios Hollywood Is Building Momentum

Super Nintendo World was the spark, but the fire is spreading. Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, a new coaster from Intamin, is currently testing with ride vehicles on the track and is expected to open this summer. The ride will send guests along 4,100 feet of aerial track spanning across the Universal City hillside, reaching speeds up to 72 mph with 360-degree rotation technology that simulates the sensation of drifting.

I was at the car unveiling event, and the vehicles look incredible. The ride will feature four distinct cars modeled after iconic vehicles from the franchise: a Dodge Charger, Mazda RX-7, Nissan Skyline GT-R, and Toyota Supra, each seating four guests. What I’m really hoping for is that Universal goes all in on the sensory experience. Imagine on-board audio with iconic soundtracks from the Fast and Furious movies. Maybe even different cars playing different songs tied to specific films or characters. Combine that with engine sounds, Dom’s voice coming over the intercom, and the physical sensation of drifting at speed, and you’ve got something that genuinely simulates what it feels like to be behind the wheel in a Fast and Furious chase. That blend of audio, speed, and physical forces is what could make Hollywood Drift more than just a great coaster. It could be a complete experience.

That’s two major additions to the park in three years. Universal Studios Hollywood has historically been a park that replaces rather than expands, but the current trajectory feels different. To their credit, the recent additions have been genuine growth. Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash brought an attraction to a space that wasn’t being used for rides. Super Nintendo World was built on former sound stages that weren’t part of the guest experience. Universal has been finding ways to grow the park’s footprint, and that approach is working.

The Case for Continued Expansion

The competitive landscape in Southern California makes continued expansion essential. Disneyland Resort is right down the road with two theme parks and more total ride capacity. That’s the reality Universal Studios Hollywood is operating in. It’s not a criticism. Universal is a different kind of park with a different identity. But to really compete for multi-day visits and capture more of the Los Angeles market, the path forward is growth.

I’d love to see Universal Studios Hollywood eventually add a resort hotel and enough attractions to make it feel like a multi-day destination. The park has genuine momentum right now with Super Nintendo World and Hollywood Drift. The question is whether Universal continues to find ways to expand rather than simply cycling attractions in and out. If the last three years are any indication, the team in Hollywood understands that expansion is the play.

A Personal Wishlist: Unique Super Nintendo Worlds

Here’s an idea I keep coming back to, and this is purely a personal wishlist, not speculation or reporting.

Super Nintendo World currently exists at Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Universal Epic Universe in Orlando. Each version shares the same core DNA: the Mario experience, Mario Kart, the mini games, Toadstool Cafe. But what if each location got a unique expansion that only existed at that specific park?

At Epic Universe, there’s space adjacent to Super Nintendo World that fans have been watching closely. Various rumors and speculation point toward different Nintendo IPs, and something like a Legend of Zelda experience that only lives in Orlando is the kind of addition that would make Epic Universe’s version of the land a destination on its own.

At Universal Studios Hollywood, I have a long list of IPs I’d be excited about. Luigi’s Mansion, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, even a Super Smash Bros. arena-style experience. Any of these could work. One idea I keep coming back to is Luigi’s Mansion, and here’s why: Super Nintendo World at Hollywood was built on the site of the former Stage 28, the historic sound stage that housed the opera house sets from the 1925 Phantom of the Opera for nearly a century before it was demolished. A haunted attraction built on the same ground where one of Hollywood’s most iconic horror sets once stood has a certain poetry to it. Could you imagine subtle nods to the Phantom’s history worked into a Luigi’s Mansion queue? It’s an ambitious idea, and probably more of a fan dream than something Nintendo would realistically go for, but the storytelling connection is right there.

For Universal Studios Japan, a unique expansion could lean into properties that resonate specifically with Japanese audiences.

The point isn’t any one specific IP. It’s the concept. Every Super Nintendo World gives you the base Super Mario experience with the original attractions, but a unique expansion is what would set each one apart. It would give fans a reason to visit every Super Nintendo World, not just the closest one. It would turn the land from a themed area into a global franchise with regional exclusives, similar to how Nintendo approaches its own content. Universal already understands this philosophy. Epic Universe is a completely different park from anything in Hollywood or Japan. Applying that same thinking to Super Nintendo World could give the Nintendo partnership a runway for decades.

Three Years In, the Future Is Bright

Super Nintendo World didn’t just add a land to Universal Studios Hollywood. It raised the bar for what guests expect from the park. Three years later, with a Mario Galaxy movie celebration launching on MAR10 Day, Hollywood Drift testing on the tracks, and a partnership with Nintendo that keeps delivering, Universal Studios Hollywood is in the strongest position it’s been in for a long time.

The best part is that it feels like the beginning, not the peak. And for fans of these parks, that’s exactly where you want to be.
