The Sherman Brothers Robert and Richard have made history as composers for the Walt Disney Company; with some of their most famous work being for the original Mary Poppins film in 1964, which they won two Academy Awards for, the Sherman Brothers also did work for Walt for a more niche project that would debut at the New York World’s Fair that same year, which would go on to become one of the most recognizable and beloved pieces of music in the industry.
When Walt Disney approached the brothers to compose a song for an attraction that would make its debut at the 1964 World’s Fair, the order was a tall one indeed – in support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Walt wanted an exhibit that would speak to UNICEF’s message and the idea of a global cooperation for the goal of a better tomorrow. Thus, It’s a Small World was born, and the Sherman Brothers were put to the task of composing music for the exhibit.
The attraction saw great success at the World’s Fair, and was eventually moved to Disneyland Park, where it opened with the park on May 28th, 1966, and would go on to become a cornerstone of the Disney Theme Park Brand, with an iconic song that’s known around the world. The song remained unchanged, famous for both its lyrics and its melody, for 59 years.
This new verse of It’s a Small World was written by Richard Sherman before his passing in 2024, as a cherished gift to the studio. The Sherman Brothers had dedicated their talents to the Walt Disney Company, garnering success and accolades for both the studio and the composers, and their partnership with the company had been a crowning achievement in return. This final verse was gifted to Bob Iger in 2023, and was set to be debuted to the public this year. Now, the Walt Disney Company has finally released this three and a half minute short film, The Last Verse, which features – and indeed, showcases with pride – the last verse itself.
“As the legendary creators of some of the most cherished music of the past century, the Sherman brothers will be remembered for their profound impact on our global culture,” said Iger. “This beautiful short film is our tribute to their immeasurable musical contributions, their memory, and to the countless memories they helped create for generations of people around the world.”
The Last Verse takes its audience on a remarkable journey through the impact of the Sherman Brother’s work during their partnership with Disney, which spanned decades. From It’s a Small World to the timeless songs of Mary Poppins and more, the Sherman Brothers have without a doubt left a lasting impact on the industry and all who have heard – and will hear – their music.
Originally a part of a two-hour special aired on ABC in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the original Mary Poppins film, The Last Verse has now been released to the public in short form, and is available on Disney+, as well as on Disney’s YouTube and social media sites.
