Why is Lola throwing this quinceañera?
Lola plans the party to take revenge on the people who hurt her. It takes place in the burned-out ruins of her childhood home, where her parents died in a fire during Día de los Muertos. Lola’s birthday is November 2.
Lola survived the fire, but it left her with physical and emotional scars. Orphaned and disfigured, she became a target for classmates who ridiculed her. She found refuge in stories her parents once told her about ghosts, spirits and monsters that punished the wicked.
In her classmates’ eyes, Lola was a monster. As her 15th birthday approached, she decided to turn that judgment back on them. She planned her own quinceañera and summoned creatures from those childhood stories to carry out her revenge.
A quinceañera traditionally celebrates a girl’s passage into adulthood and the people who helped her get there. Lola’s guest list twists that idea: her classmates form the court, while the creatures she conjures become the invited guests. She sets out 15 candles, one for each intended victim.
That story gives the party setting a reason for its burned-out surroundings and its mix of human and supernatural guests. It’s one of the haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights 2026 at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Which folklore creatures appear in Killceañera?
Murdy named El Cucuy, La Lechuza, Tlahuelpuchi and La Llorona among the returning figures from the Monstruos trilogy. El Silbón and El Charro also appear. The characters come from Latin American myths and legends, primarily from Mexico.
La Mala Hora is a new face for these houses. Her name means “The Evil Hour” or “The Evil One.” Murdy describes her as an evil spirit dressed entirely in black who appears at midnight as a harbinger of death.
Murdy is the creative director and executive producer of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. He has overseen the event’s creative development since its 2006 relaunch. For this house, he took an older idea and gave Lola’s summoned guests faces from the “Monstruos” stories.
