Bakso the Sumatran tiger will leave Disney’s Animal Kingdom later this fall for another accredited zoo. The move follows his second birthday and could eventually allow him to father cubs.
Born to Sohni and Conrad in September 2024, Bakso made his public debut at the park in January 2025. Guests have watched him splash in a pool and pounce on enrichment along Maharajah Jungle Trek.
Why is Bakso leaving Disney’s Animal Kingdom?
Bakso’s move follows a recommendation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. The program helps accredited zoos coordinate care for endangered animals and support their future in managed care.
Young tigers become more independent as they mature and eventually establish territories of their own. Bakso’s upcoming move is a natural next step as he enters adulthood.
Fewer than 600 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild, according to Disney. Bakso could one day father cubs, making his care part of a wider effort to support the species.
The Disney Conservation Fund has provided more than $4.5 million to 15 organizations since 1995. Those organizations work with communities to protect tigers and their forest habitats.
Bakso’s name comes from the Indonesian word for “meatball.” Like every tiger, he has his own stripe pattern.
Where can guests see Bakso before he leaves?
Guests can visit Bakso on Maharajah Jungle Trek at Disney’s Animal Kingdom before he leaves. The announcement gives his departure timing only as later this fall.
His birthday treats include ice treats and goat’s milk. Behind the scenes, animal care staff prepare meals, monitor his health and tailor enrichment to his behavior.
Sarah, an animal keeper, helps care for the tigers on the trek each day. Her work includes feeding, enrichment and health monitoring. “I’ve learned so much watching him learn, grow, and reach amazing milestones,” she said.
Michelle, a behavioral husbandry manager, helps keepers teach Bakso to participate in health checks. She also works with Sohni and helps design habitat activities that encourage Bakso’s natural behaviors. Michelle observes Bakso’s reactions and preferences to learn more about his personality.
“People don’t realize how different every tiger’s personality truly is,” Michelle said.
