King Kong 360 Drops 3D at Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour

King Kong 360 at Universal Studios Hollywood is dropping the 3D from its Studio Tour experience.

Universal updated the attraction’s listing on its official website to confirm the change. The experience still features the same large-scale screens and motion effects aboard the Studio Tour tram, but guests no longer need to wear 3D glasses during the sequence.

The attraction has been listed as closed for several weeks. Reports suggest a soft reopening may be underway, though Universal has not officially confirmed this.

King Kong 360 originally debuted in 2010 as part of the Studio Tour. It replaced the original King Kong Encounter, which was destroyed in a fire on the Universal backlot in 2008. The Peter Jackson-directed experience uses massive screens to immerse guests in a battle between Kong and V-Rex dinosaurs as the tram passes through.

The move mirrors what Universal did with Skull Island: Reign of Kong at Islands of Adventure in Orlando. That attraction also launched with 3D glasses but had its 3D component removed in early 2024.

The shift away from 3D on ride attractions has been an ongoing trend across the theme park industry. Guests and parks alike have moved toward screen-based experiences that don’t require wearing glasses, citing comfort and practicality as factors.

Universal has not yet confirmed an official reopening date for the updated experience.
