Abbott Elementary, the ABC sitcom about teachers at Willard R. Abbott Public School, returns for a sixth season. The premiere is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, with the series approaching its 100th episode during the season.

Gregory Eddie’s future becomes a central storyline. Tyler James Williams, who plays the first grade teacher, said Gregory will consider what comes next in life and work. That thread carries over from the previous season.
- Airtime: The premiere is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on ABC.
- Streaming: Episodes stream the next day on Hulu.
- Bundle access: Bundle subscribers can also watch through Hulu on Disney+.
For creator and star Quinta Brunson, who plays second grade teacher Janine Teagues, the episode milestone carries personal weight. “It’s a big deal,” she said. “And, every day, we’re kind of learning how special it is.”
Why did Quinta Brunson create Abbott Elementary?
Brunson wanted a funny show that people could watch with their families. She’d struggled to find shows she could share with her own relatives, so she built that intention into Abbott Elementary.

Now, she hears from parents whose children introduced them to the series. “That’s a really special feeling,” Brunson said.
Lisa Ann Walter, who plays sixth grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti, recalled one mother’s story about her teenage daughter. The pair had struggled to connect before the daughter left for college. They found common ground through the sitcom and began watching together over the phone each week.
Walter couldn’t wait to tell Brunson.
Sheryl Lee Ralph, who plays kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, sees those shared conversations as part of the show’s purpose. Families laugh together, she said, then discuss something new or different they learned.
How does the Abbott Elementary cast describe their characters?
The cast points to distinct personalities that keep the school’s ensemble working. Brunson calls Janine’s defining trait “unbridled optimism” and remains amazed by how much optimism her character still has.
Williams sees Gregory as “the eyes of the audience,” trying to bring structure to the school’s chaos. Walter describes Melissa as pragmatic and truthful, but also ready to bring some chaos.
For Chris Perfetti, history teacher Jacob Hill acts as the school’s conscience, pushing everyone toward their highest ideals.
Ava takes a different approach. Janelle James, who plays principal Ava Coleman, calls her character an amplified version of herself. “Ava is me, turned up to 10,” she said. Before each scene, James shifts into the persona of a ringmaster running the school circus.

William Stanford Davis looks beneath custodian Mr. Johnson’s gruff exterior for his humanity. “I think he has a good heart,” Davis said. He tries to find something honest about the character every time he plays him.
