Hollywood Studios needs Lightning Lane more than any other Walt Disney World park. 56% of its rides average over 60 minutes in standby, the highest ratio of any Disney park. Using Lightning Lane Multi Pass on its top 5 rides saves approximately 5.8 hours of waiting. Here is the data for all four parks, ranked by how much Lightning Lane changes your day.

How We Measured This

Theme Park Shark tracks wait times across all four Walt Disney World parks using our proprietary data collection system. We compared the average standby wait for every ride against an estimated Lightning Lane wait of 10 minutes per ride (the typical LL experience). The difference is your time saved. We also calculated what percentage of each park’s rides have waits long enough to make Lightning Lane worth using.

The Rankings: Which Park Gets the Most Value From Lightning Lane?

Rank Park Avg Standby Rides Over 60 Min % Over 60 Min Time Saved (Top 5)
1 Hollywood Studios 59 min 5 of 9 56% 5.8 hours
2 EPCOT 47 min 4 of 12 33% 6.2 hours
3 Animal Kingdom 39 min 2 of 8 25% 3.8 hours
4 Magic Kingdom 33 min 4 of 29 14% 5.4 hours

Why Hollywood Studios Needs Lightning Lane the Most

Hollywood Studios has only 9 ride-type attractions (excluding shows and character experiences), fewer than any other Walt Disney World park. When the same number of guests are distributed across fewer attractions, lines get longer. Five of those nine rides average over 60 minutes in standby. Without Lightning Lane, riding all five headliners takes roughly 6.5 hours of standing in line alone, leaving almost no time for shows, dining, or the parks themselves.

The five rides that make Lightning Lane essential at Hollywood Studios:

Ride Avg Standby With Lightning Lane Time Saved
Slinky Dog Dash 100 min ~10 min 90 min
Rise of the Resistance 88 min ~10 min 78 min
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run 76 min ~10 min 66 min
Tower of Terror 70 min ~10 min 60 min
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway 65 min ~10 min 55 min

Note: Rise of the Resistance requires Lightning Lane Single Pass (a separate purchase of $15-25), not Multi Pass. The other four rides are available through Multi Pass.

EPCOT: Second Most Valuable Park for Lightning Lane

EPCOT ranks second because one-third of its rides average over 60 minutes, and its top two attractions (Cosmic Rewind at 118 min and Test Track at 104 min) have some of the longest waits at all of Walt Disney World. Lightning Lane saves 6.2 hours on the top 5 rides, actually the highest raw time savings of any park. EPCOT ranks second instead of first because its lower-wait rides (Gran Fiesta Tour, Living with the Land, Journey Into Imagination) are easily done in standby, giving you more options without Lightning Lane than Hollywood Studios offers.

Ride Avg Standby Time Saved
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind 118 min 108 min
Test Track 104 min 94 min
Frozen Ever After 80 min 70 min
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure 72 min 62 min
Soarin’ Around the World 49 min 39 min

Note: Cosmic Rewind requires Lightning Lane Single Pass ($16-22). The other four are available through Multi Pass.

Animal Kingdom: Lightning Lane Helps, But You Can Manage Without It

Animal Kingdom has only two rides averaging over 60 minutes: Avatar Flight of Passage (101 min) and Na’vi River Journey (61 min). The rest of the park, including Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest, is manageable in standby. Lightning Lane saves 3.8 hours on the top 5 rides. If you are on a budget, Animal Kingdom is the park where you can most confidently skip Lightning Lane and use rope drop strategy instead.

Magic Kingdom: The Park That Needs Lightning Lane the Least

This surprises most people. Magic Kingdom is the most visited theme park in the world, yet it has the lowest average wait time at Walt Disney World: 33 minutes. The reason is simple: 29 tracked attractions spread the crowd across more rides than any other park. Only 14% of rides average over 60 minutes. TRON (113 min) and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (80 min) are the only rides where Lightning Lane dramatically changes your experience.

If you are buying Lightning Lane for one park day, do not choose Magic Kingdom first. Hollywood Studios or EPCOT will give you significantly more value per dollar.

The Verdict: How to Decide

Scenario Recommendation
One day at Hollywood Studios Buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass. Without it, you will spend most of your day in line.
One day at EPCOT Buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass if Cosmic Rewind, Test Track, and Frozen are priorities. Consider Single Pass for Cosmic Rewind alone if budget is tight.
One day at Magic Kingdom Consider skipping Lightning Lane. Rope drop TRON, ride Seven Dwarfs before noon, and most other rides are manageable in standby.
One day at Animal Kingdom Skip Lightning Lane. Rope drop Flight of Passage, do Na’vi River Journey in the first hour, and the rest of the park flows easily.
Multi-day trip Buy Lightning Lane for your Hollywood Studios and EPCOT days. Save money by going standby at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lightning Lane worth it at Disney World?

It depends on the park. At Hollywood Studios, Lightning Lane saves nearly 6 hours of waiting and is strongly recommended. At Magic Kingdom, most rides are manageable without it. Theme Park Shark’s data shows the value varies dramatically by park, with Hollywood Studios offering 4x more impact per dollar than Magic Kingdom.

How much does Lightning Lane Multi Pass cost at Disney World?

Lightning Lane Multi Pass costs $15-45 per person per day, depending on the park, date, and demand. Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom typically have the highest prices. Off-peak weekday prices start at $15. Peak holiday prices can reach $35.

Which Disney park can I skip Lightning Lane?

Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom are the best parks to skip Lightning Lane. Animal Kingdom has only two rides averaging over 60 minutes, and Magic Kingdom spreads crowds across 29 attractions keeping most wait times under 50 minutes. Use rope drop strategy at these parks instead.

Why are Hollywood Studios wait times so long?

Hollywood Studios has only 9 major rides, the fewest of any Walt Disney World park. When the same guest volume is distributed across fewer attractions, each line gets longer. 56% of Hollywood Studios rides average over 60 minutes, compared to just 14% at Magic Kingdom which has 29 rides.
