Hollywood Studios is the busiest park at Walt Disney World on a per-ride basis. The average wait across major attractions sits at 51 minutes – higher than Magic Kingdom (37 min average) or EPCOT (43 min average). But the bigger story is when to go: unlike Magic Kingdom, where rope drop saves the most time, Hollywood Studios data shows that evenings are when the lines actually drop.

Rise of the Resistance averages 100 minutes at rope drop and 63 minutes after 7 PM. Slinky Dog Dash goes from 97 minutes at open to 64 minutes in the evening. If you’re planning your day around wait times, the evening window is where Hollywood Studios gives the biggest returns.

What Makes Hollywood Studios Different

At Magic Kingdom, rope drop is the power move – Tiana’s Bayou Adventure drops from 60 minutes at peak to 14 minutes at open. At EPCOT, Soarin’ saves 40 minutes by going first thing. Hollywood Studios breaks that pattern.

The reason is the park’s layout and ride mix. Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land both open with high initial demand. Rise of the Resistance, in particular, builds a line fast – guests who’ve been in the park since open are already queuing before most people have ridden their first ride. By evening, those guests have either left or spread across the park, and the Galaxy’s Edge crowd thins considerably.

Ride-by-Ride Strategy

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

100 minutes at rope drop, 63 minutes at 7 PM. The data is clear: skip this at open. Either use Lightning Lane Single Pass (purchase it immediately when entering the park) or ride after 7 PM when the crowd thins. Rise is the top Lightning Lane priority at Hollywood Studios.

Slinky Dog Dash

97 minutes at rope drop, 64 minutes in the evening. Like Rise, there’s almost no benefit to rushing here at open – the line is just as long. Lightning Lane Multi Pass books up early, so if you have LLMP, grab Slinky as your first booking. Otherwise, plan for an evening ride when the 30-minute drop kicks in.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

54 minutes at rope drop, 40 minutes in the evening. Moderate wait all day. Available through Lightning Lane Multi Pass as a Tier 1 selection. Good candidate for early LLMP booking if Slinky is your standby plan.

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

61 minutes at both rope drop and peak – no early advantage. Evening drops it to 40 minutes, making late afternoon or evening the only time the standby line is worth it. This is a Lightning Lane Multi Pass ride on busy days.

Tower of Terror

Waits are steady at 52-57 minutes during the day, dropping to 41 minutes in the evening. High-capacity ride that tends to move faster than the posted time suggests. One of the better values at the park – the actual time in line is often shorter than displayed.

Toy Story Mania!

30 minutes in the evening versus 52-55 minutes the rest of the day. Strong evening candidate. Not worth Lightning Lane on most days – save that booking for Slinky or Rise.

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue

Consistently 6-15 minutes regardless of time. Ride it whenever – no strategy needed. Good filler between bigger attractions.

Recommended Hollywood Studios Strategy

Option 1: Lightning Lane + Evening Approach

  1. Enter park, immediately buy Rise of the Resistance Lightning Lane Single Pass.
  2. Head to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway or Tower of Terror for reasonable morning waits.
  3. Ride Rise at your Lightning Lane window.
  4. Use afternoon for shows (Indiana Jones, Fantasmic) and low-wait attractions.
  5. After 7 PM: Slinky Dog Dash (64 min), Smugglers Run (40 min), Toy Story Mania! (30 min).

Option 2: No Lightning Lane

  1. Morning: Runaway Railway and Tower of Terror (both manageable before noon).
  2. Midday: Shows, Star Tours, low-priority rides while big attractions peak.
  3. After 6 PM: Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash, Smugglers Run, Toy Story Mania! – hit all four in sequence before park close.
