Dancing with the Stars’ “Disney Night” takes its costume inspiration from Broadway on Monday, November 2. The ballroom competition’s remaining eight couples will perform routines inspired by Disney stories and their stage adaptations.

Ariel’s costume will use fringe rather than fabric. Designer Daniela Gschwendtner says the team tries new ideas and different fabrics when revisiting familiar characters, including Jasmine.

Broadway characters and costume changes
Costume designers Steven Lee and Gschwendtner told D23 this is their first Disney Night themed to Disney on Broadway. Lee said the musical selections draw from shows on Broadway or London’s West End.

The opening number will feature music from The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, and The Greatest Showman. Gschwendtner singled out that sequence because of the number of costumes involved.

Belle appears in the Beauty and the Beast segment. The opening also calls for female performers to change from a waltz look into what Gschwendtner called a “showgirl” look.
Val Chmerkovskiy will portray the Beast. Lee praised how Chmerkovskiy wears period clothing, saying he looks elegant in that style of dress.

Mark Ballas will play Captain Hook. Lee said Ballas loves playing characters and hopes he’ll use his real hair for the role.
Lee particularly enjoys the male performers’ costumes because the dancers get to be “peacocks.” They can explore personalities and wear clothes they wouldn’t usually choose.

The designers also looked back at an attraction-inspired routine.
That memory prompted an idea, not a future episode plan: “Maybe we should do all Parks attractions one day,” Lee said. Lee suggested Mr. Toad as another possible inspiration.
