An Animorphs television series is in early development at Disney+, according to a Variety exclusive published on April 3, 2026. Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian are attached as executive producers through their Proximity Media banner.
Who Is Involved
Bayan Wolcott, whose credits include The Testaments and The Summer I Turned Pretty, is attached to write and executive produce the adaptation. Scholastic’s Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman are also executive producing. The project is being produced by 20th Television, with Proximity Media’s Simone Harris and Dezi Gallegos overseeing development.
What the Show Is About
The official logline describes the series as following “a group of teenagers who uncover a hidden threat lurking beneath their everyday lives, all while juggling relationships, curfews, and the chaos of high school.” The original Animorphs book series, written by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant, ran for 54 installments between 1996 and 2001 and was published by Scholastic.
The books followed five teenagers (and later a sixth) who gain the ability to morph into any animal they touch, using that power to fight a secret alien invasion. The series was previously adapted into a Nickelodeon TV show that ran from 1998 to 2000. A film adaptation was announced in 2020 but never moved forward.
What This Means for Disney+
This is the latest project from Proximity Media’s deal with Disney, which has already produced Eyes of Wakanda and Ironheart. Coogler is also developing an X-Files reboot. No cast, release date, or episode count has been announced for Animorphs.
