Disney Cruise Line’s newest mega-ship just made history. The Disney Adventure on Monday became the largest cruise ship by gross tonnage to ever transit the Panama Canal, smashing the previous record by a massive 40,000 tons.

At 208,100 gross tons, the Disney Adventure is 24 percent larger than the Norwegian Bliss, which previously held the record. She’s also the first cruise ship over 200,000 gross tons to make the transit — a milestone the Panama Canal Authority celebrated with a special plaque ceremony at the Agua Clara Locks.

The numbers are staggering. At 1,122 feet long and 152 feet wide, the ship had just eight feet of clearance on each side while passing through the Neopanamax Locks. Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez was aboard for the historic crossing.

The Disney Adventure is currently on her repositioning voyage from Germany, where she was built at the Meyer Werft shipyard, to her permanent homeport in Singapore. She made a stop at Port Canaveral, Florida over the weekend for crew training coordinated with Walt Disney World before heading through the canal.

Next up, the ship is headed to Los Angeles, where she’s expected to arrive on February 9, followed by stops in Tokyo before finally reaching Singapore ahead of her March 10 maiden voyage.

The Disney Adventure accommodates over 6,700 passengers in 2,111 staterooms with a crew of 2,500. The ship was originally built for Genting Hong Kong but was acquired by Disney after Genting’s bankruptcy and completely transformed with Disney theming, character experiences, and Marvel-themed areas.

This transit comes during a busy cruise season for the Panama Canal, which expects more than 40 Neopanamax cruise ship transits in fiscal year 2026.
