The experience continues the story from the franchise’s third film. Guests walk among real movie sets as Art unleashes an original holiday rampage.
What happens on the Terror Tram?
The journey begins when guests leave the tram and find Art waiting in a Santa cap. Art appears soaked in blood when guests first disembark. An unsettling Christmas tune plays as chainsaw-wielding Nutcracker characters surround the opening scene.
The experience features Art’s new minions, who share his color palette. Bobby Tilley, manager of costume design and production for Halloween Horror Nights, said the new characters share Art’s color palette.
From there, the route moves through Art’s Christmas Tree Farm. Demonic elves stalk the pine trees before guests reach the 12 Slays of Christmas.
That section presents chaotic holiday vignettes, with Art’s minions attacking Christmas carolers. Then Art’s Christmas Cafe turns the guests into the menu.
A turkey and ham staff the cafe. Beyond them, glowing snowmen carry axes and baseball bats through a suburban neighborhood.
It ends inside Art’s lair. The exterior resembles a gingerbread house or Santa’s workshop, but Art makes weapons inside.
Why did Universal create an original Art story?
Last year’s fan-favorite house drew rave reviews. Universal Creative wanted to expand his world afterward. Art also roamed the park during that event, attracting crowds wherever he went.
John Murdy is Universal Studios Hollywood’s creative director and executive producer. He said crowds followed Art wherever the character went.
Murdy was a teenager during the slasher film era. “Horror always changes and evolves,” he said. He felt no iconic horror character had rivaled that period until Art arrived.
The answer required original songs, storylines, and several new characters. Murdy said the Terror Tram covers an area about the size of a football field. He also described the cast as huge.
That scale needed more than a direct recreation of one film. Universal Creative worked with Art the Clown’s creator to build a separate world for the character.
Murdy said Leone loves Halloween Horror Nights. The collaboration helped shape an evil Christmas world for Art, his minions, and the backlot.
How does Terror Tram connect to the films?
The story starts where the franchise’s third film ended, then moves into original territory. Universal didn’t have a one-to-one film comparison for the experience.
That freedom placed Art’s silent persona inside holiday scenes designed for the backlot. It also allowed his minions to become part of the character’s world.
“For fans, the excitement lies in getting to see their favorite character in a brand new way,” Murdy said.
