Darkwing Duck is back. Disney+ has greenlit an all-new animated series that brings back Drake Mallard, and Mark Hamill is voicing him.
The new series comes from Sean Tretta (“Star Trek: Picard”) and Borja Peña Gorostegui (“Lost & Crowned”), who both serve as executive producers. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures is producing. Tad Stones, who created the original “Darkwing Duck,” consulted on development.
What is the new Darkwing Duck series about?
For the last 35 years, Darkwing has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world that’s never heard of his superhero exploits. The original premiered in 1991, so the math checks out.
His way out is Duckie, a rebellious teen who knows all about his heroic past. Duckie shows up to pull the ego-fueled vigilante back into battle. The two take on old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt. Along the way, they reunite with Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana to save the entire universe.
Stones sounds happy with where it’s headed. “Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series,” he said. He added that the series puts Darkwing in the tradition of Robin Hood, Zorro and Sherlock Holmes, heroes reinterpreted across eras and mediums.
“No matter when or where, Darkwing Duck will appear in a cloud of blue smoke to grab the spotlight,” Stones said.
Who is in the Darkwing Duck voice cast?
Hamill leads the cast as Drake Mallard, bringing voice credits from “Batman: The Animated Series” and “Batman: Arkham Asylum.” Here’s the full lead cast:
- Mark Hamill as Drake Mallard aka Darkwing Duck
- Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack
- Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard
- Lilimar as Duckie
- Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers
- Tiffany Shepis as Rosa
- Kathryn Newton as Firecracker
- Teo Briones as Timb
- Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy
- Katie Rich as Officer Shanks
- Nat Faxon as Officer Webb
The Point Grey team gave the shortest statement: “Disney said ‘Let’s get dangerous’ and we said ‘hell yeah.'” The company recently produced a Disney+ installment of The Muppet Show, which won four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded).
Where can you watch the original Darkwing Duck?
The original “Darkwing Duck” is streaming now on Disney+. Disney Television Animation produced the Emmy-nominated series, which ran for 91 episodes.
It premiered on Disney Channel, then aired on ABC and in syndication. The ABC run ended in 1993, and syndication wrapped in 1995. The show made a brief syndication return from 1996 to 1997.
Darkwing didn’t stay on TV. He got his own games on the Nintendo NES in 1992 and Game Boy in 1993. In November 1994, he appeared in the Disney Afternoon “Fun-Filled 1st Issue!” comic alongside Bonkers, the Goof Troop and TaleSpin. In recent years, the iconic character appeared in the latest iteration of “DuckTales.”
