For guests, the biggest planning change is simple: more kids can now ride. Disney says the coaster reopened with a lowered 38-inch height requirement following a comprehensive safety review.

What changed

The refurbishment included the installation of new track and refreshed passenger trains, according to Disney. The work was designed to keep the attraction’s classic runaway mine train story intact while giving the ride new movement, detail, and long-term life.

The refreshed version still follows the Big Thunder Mountain Company story, centered on Barnabas T. Bullion and the trouble that follows mining too deep into the mountain. Disney’s post frames the returning ride as the same wild Western adventure, now polished from the mountain top to the caverns below.

Rainbow Caverns

The biggest show-scene addition is Rainbow Caverns, an underground sequence Disney describes as natural caverns filled with phosphorescent pools, shimmering light, iridescent stalagmites, and iridescent stalactites.

Rainbow Caverns brings a new underground show moment to the ride.

Disney also notes that the caverns are not meant to feel completely friendly. The scene includes a menacing rumble from deep inside the mountain, which points guests back to the attraction’s long-running idea that Big Thunder itself is pushing back against the miners.

Height requirement

The Magic Kingdom coaster now lists a 38-inch height requirement, down from its previous requirement after Disney’s safety teams completed a comprehensive review tied to the refurbishment.

That lower requirement could make the attraction available to more families with younger riders at Magic Kingdom. For families who previously had to split up around Big Thunder, the new number is the first thing to check before heading to the ride.

What guests should know

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is one of Magic Kingdom’s major coaster draws, and its return gives Magic Kingdom one of its signature rides back after refurbishment. Guests returning to the mountain should expect the familiar runaway mine train setup with new details layered into the experience.

The practical takeaway: if Big Thunder is a priority, double-check the new 38-inch height requirement before promising the ride to younger prospectors.
