Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom will reopen on May 3, 2026, following a refurbishment that Disney describes as “crevasse-deep to mountain-top.” The coaster has been closed since January 2025.
The entire steel roller coaster track has been replaced. Passenger trains have been refreshed. And riders will encounter a brand-new scene called Rainbow Caverns.
What Is the New Rainbow Caverns Scene on Big Thunder Mountain?
Rainbow Caverns is an underground sequence being added to the ride. According to Disney Parks Blog, the scene features phosphorescent pools that shimmer and illuminate iridescent stalagmites rising from the cavern floor and stalactites hanging from above. New audio-animatronic bats inhabit the space.
The caverns fit within the existing storyline of Barnabas T. Bullion, the gold prospector whose mining operation runs through the mountain. The supernatural forces resisting his operation now extend deeper underground.
What Is the New Height Requirement for Big Thunder Mountain?
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will lower its height requirement from 40 inches to 38 inches when it reopens. Disney confirmed this change follows a comprehensive safety review conducted during the refurbishment. The two-inch reduction opens the ride to younger guests who previously could not board.
What Else Changed During the Big Thunder Mountain Refurbishment?
Beyond the new track, new scene, and adjusted height requirement, Disney confirmed refreshed rockwork throughout the attraction. The refurbishment has been ongoing for approximately 15 months.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad originally opened at Magic Kingdom in 1980. The ride is a mine train-style roller coaster set during the Gold Rush era in the American Southwest.
