The long-awaited Eragon live-action TV series at Disney+ has taken a significant step forward with major creative talent joining the project.

According to Variety, Todd Harthan and Todd Helbing have joined as co-showrunners, with Harthan set as co-creator alongside Eragon author Christopher Paolini. All three will serve as executive producers on the series.

Marc Webb, best known for directing (500) Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man films, has also come aboard as an executive producer, along with Rachel Moore. Bert Salke will executive produce via Co-Lab 21, with 20th Television serving as the studio.

Meet the Creative Team

Todd Harthan brings impressive credentials to the project. He is currently the showrunner on ABC’s hit series “High Potential” and previously created the Fox drama “Rosewood.” His other credits include “Psych,” “The Resident,” and “The Company You Keep.”

Todd Helbing was the co-creator of The CW’s beloved “Superman & Lois” and served as showrunner on “The Flash.” He is currently developing a “Mech Cadets” TV series at Disney+ with Brent Fletcher, and his other work includes “Black Sails,” “Spartacus,” and “Smallville.”

A Long Time Coming

Disney+ first announced the Eragon adaptation back in 2022. The official logline describes the series: “When destiny selects an ordinary teenager to become the first Dragon Rider in over a hundred years, he must forge an unbreakable bond with his dragon, master ancient magic, and challenge the mad king who destroyed the Riders.”

The show remains in development at Disney+, with 20th Television having optioned the entire “The Inheritance Cycle” book series. Eragon is the first of four books in the series, followed by “Eldest,” “Brisingr,” and “Inheritance.” The books have collectively sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.

This new adaptation comes nearly two decades after the widely panned 2006 film starring Ed Speleers as Eragon, Jeremy Irons as Brom, and John Malkovich as Galbatorix. Fans of the books launched the #EragonRemake campaign in 2021, hoping Disney would give the story a proper treatment on the streaming platform.

With Paolini himself involved as co-creator and executive producer, fans finally have reason to be optimistic that this adaptation will do justice to the beloved fantasy series.
