Phony, a coming-of-age mystery starring Connie Britton, premieres October 20 on Hulu on Disney+. A teenager wakes up in the hospital after a car accident and discovers his mother appears to be an impostor.

Sam Nivola plays Sam, whose mother is his only parent and best friend. Britton plays his mother, Ellen. The series combines its mystery with quirky humor.
Nick Paley created the series.
Britton’s earlier roles span ABC sitcoms, country music drama, and a haunted house. They include an accountant navigating an on-and-off romance and a dispatcher whose emergency call connects her with someone familiar.
From Spin City to The Wonderful World of Disney
On ABC’s Spin City, Britton played Nikki Faber from 1996 to 2000. Nikki works as an accountant at the New York City Mayor’s Office. Her relationship with deputy mayor Mike, played by Michael J. Fox, runs hot and cold.

Britton also appeared as Madeleine in the 1998 pilot of ABC’s Cupid. Jeremy Piven starred as Trevor, a man who might be the Roman god of love. Psychologist Dr. Claire Allen, played by Paula Marshall, questions his identity while agreeing with his matchmaking mission.
In 2001, Britton portrayed Gertrude Temple in Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story. The movie aired through ABC’s The Wonderful World of Disney. Based on Shirley Temple’s autobiography, it follows her childhood career and transition into teenage roles. Gertrude, Shirley’s mother, often worked as her personal coach.
ABC’s Lost at Home followed in 2003. Britton played Rachel Davis, whose husband Michael, played by Mitch Rouse, struggles to balance advertising success with family life. Rachel gives him an ultimatum.

Undercover identities, country music, and emergency calls
Britton joined FOX’s 24 as Diane Huxley in its fifth season in 2006.

In FX’s American Horror Story: Murder House, she played Vivien Harmon in 2011. Vivien moves with her family from Boston into a Victorian house in Los Angeles, where spirits complicate their lives.

Britton’s Nashville character, Rayna Jaymes, faces a different challenge: reinventing herself as a country music star. Hayden Panettiere plays rising performer Juliette Barnes, whose ambitions put her at odds with Rayna.

On 9-1-1, Britton played dispatcher Abigail “Abby” Clark in the first season. She returned for a guest appearance in 2020. During that return, a train collision prompts Abby to call emergency services. Maddie, the sister of Abby’s former boyfriend Buck, answers.
