On the evening of Tuesday the 19th, Disney Cruise Lines upheld a long standing tradition that dates back thousands of years as it held a christening celebration for its newest vessel, the Disney Treasure. This ceremony, described as a spectacle, took place on the Hudson River in New York City, and featured a lights show on a truly Disney scale, as onlookers and proud seafarers were treated to the night time spectacular featuring Disney icons represented within the message and decor of the new ship, including beloved characters from Aladdin, The Haunted Mansion, Moana, and Coco.
These beloved Disney properties will be features aboard the ship in a variety of ways; from the Agrabah-inpsired decor to the Broadway-styled retelling of Moana that guests can see aboard the ship, to the immersive dining experiences centered around the stories and aesthetics of both Coco and The Haunted Mansion, there’s no doubt that the magic of Disney storytelling truly comes to life in a uniquely immersive way aboard the Treasure.
The dazzling lights show during the ship’s christening was made possible by a synchronized display of 1,000 drones that were programmed with perfect choreographic flair to a medley of classic Disney songs, as well as a rendition of Live the Adventure sung by Jordan Sparks, who had the honor of performing the original anthem of the Disney Treasure for the christening ceremony.
“For more than 100 years, Disney stories have filled the world with joy and wonder, capturing the hearts and imaginations of generations across every continent. And since the launch of the Disney Cruise Line in 1998, our ships have become brand ambassadors that bring our world-class storytelling and the immersive nature of our theme parks to new audiences in new places all over the world,” said Bob Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, before acknowledging that everything that Disney Cruise Lines has achieved in themed entertainment is thanks to the cast members who bring the Disney magic to life, honoring the cast members as the “official godparents of the Disney Treasure.”
In a modern twist on an old traditions, Disney christened the new ship with a 65-foot-tall champagne bottle that was formed by the drones, which appeared to erupt into a burst of sparkling champagne in the sky as voices from across The Walt Disney Company, from executives to the cast members who were made honorary godparents of this new vessel, recited a blessing as is tradition for a ship christening, asking God to bless the ship and all who sail upon her, amid a moving performance from award-winning artist Jordan Sparks.
“This is an unprecedented era of growth for Disney Experiences, and a dramatic period of expansion at Disney Cruise Line,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences. “With the Disney Treasure, we continue to deliver an unparalleled family vacation at sea through the magic of Disney storytelling. The memories our guests create onboard this stunning ship will last a lifetime.” D’Amaro also mentioned that Disney Cruise Lines plans to more than double their fleet of ships to thirteen by 2031, with destinations at ports of call across the globe.
The Disney Treasure will begin its maiden voyage as it sets sail from Port Canaveral towards the Caribbean on December 21st, 2024.
